2026 SPD Administrators Council

President’s Welcome

The first time I went to the General Conference Office was in 1984 – it was the previous building in Tacoma Park. I was volunteering as a summer camp counsellor in the Potomac Conference where the GC is located. The Youth Department of the church cared for volunteers at the time and said that if I was around that I should drop in. I did. What I didn’t expect was that the GC Youth Director was in the building that day and invited me to his office. He listened to what I was doing and how I was finding it.  He also listened to my dreams and prayed for me. I will never forget how this leader treated me.

In my 40 years of ministry I once had a President call me on the phone and talk to me about an issue that really should have been dealt with face to face.  He shared his perspective and solution and did not bother to get my perspective. I felt that I did not exist and was just a tool in the church system to reach the mission outcomes.  I do hope that none of you experience such.

As administrative leaders we are often time poor and unknowingly we can treat people as another employee, a person with a problem, a budget line item that we must pay, a person who should know better …

I know I do not always get it right but ultimately our business is people.  People will always know how they feel around you – and they are the ones that have the say in that – not our good intentions. So because people are our business I need to remember to assign them the value that God gives them and listen with care and compassion. Everyone deserves dignity. Jesus said, ‘Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you.’ (Matthew 7:12).  It is the golden rule. The golden rule of leadership!  Let’s keep growing as Jesus disciples in this area!
